Indigenous Careers Australia
Background
Indigenous Careers Australia is a partnership between Talent2, LinkMe and Indigenous Success Australia who has been working nationally with major employers for the past nine years on a range of Indigenous employment and training initiatives.
Process
Indigenous Careers Australia works with organisations nationally to assist them to more effectively recruit and retain Indigenous people.
We work with employers to complete a strategy that enables effective outcomes for all concerned. The cost for these services is funded by Federal government and ordinarily involves no cost to the organisation.
We Do This By
- Engaging with Indigenous communities, employers and their staff in agreed locations
- Sourcing and attracting the right Indigenous people (promoting/marketing opportunities)
- Preparing people for the opportunities that exist within the company (pre-employment courses)
- Selecting and recruiting the right people
- Supporting and mentoring new recruits (implementing extensive retention and career development programs)
- Providing ongoing support to the organisation and general consultancy across a range of Indigenous issues as required
We provide employers with efficient and effective programs for recruiting and retaining Indigenous people without having to deal with the multitude of activities required to attract and recruit suitable Indigenous candidates.
Pre-employment Training
As part of the selection and recruitment process we conduct pre-employment training for all interested Indigenous candidates across the country. This training prepares the candidates to gain and retain employment. The training is also aimed at preparing the candidate for transition into the workplace. It provides an introductory experience of the workplace. Importantly, it gives the potential employees the opportunity to assess the industry and the employer to make sure it complements their aspirations and skills, and to better prepare them for the recruitment process.
The training covers issues of personal development, time management, health and safety guidelines, code of conduct and employer policy and standards.
Recruitment
It has been our experience that traditional/mainstream recruitment practices and processes alone do not successfully attract suitable Indigenous candidates. We communicate directly with Indigenous communities, elders and employment service providers to attract and source the best candidates in the identified regions. The use of LinkMe technology and databases makes the whole process very effective.
We have found that identifying and using Indigenous community contacts ensures both community and individual understanding and leads to active community support and successful Indigenous employment outcomes for the employer.
In conjunction with the pre-employment training we:
- Incorporate the recruitment process into the pre-employment training, e.g. through practice interviews, work trials, skills assessment, etc
- Carefully assess the transition process between pre-employment training and the employers' induction process
- Make sure that the pre-employment training has covered all aspects of the job, making sure that there will be no surprises to new recruits or the organisation when they start in a job
